David Berkowitz

For little more than a year, between 1976 and 1977, David Berkowitz prowled the streets of New York City killing people with a .44 revolver.

At first the tabloids called him the “.44 Caliber Killer.” Eventually though, police found a rambling note at the scene of a double murder, wherein Berkowitz proclaimed, “I am the ‘Son of Sam.’ I am a little brat.”

Son of Sam preyed mostly on young people in cars - usually couples parked at night. But he also shot two young women sitting on a stoop, and another woman as she walked home from school.

Before he was caught, Berkowitz had killed 6 young New Yorkers, and severely wounded 7 more.

Police eventually identified Berkowitz by tracing a parking ticket issued to a car that had been parked in the area of a recent double shooting.

Berkowitz was sentenced to 300 years in prison, and was said to have “found religion.”
